The Man Who Reached The Void
There are questions that haunt humanity, and there are questions that consume those who are foolish enough to pursue them. For Marcus, there was only one. “After everything ends, where do we go?”
This is a story about the man who uncovered the secrets of consciousness and what lies beyond death, Marcus Ashford. His life was shaped by early tragedy. At twelve, he watched his mother succumb to Alzheimer’s disease. Her mind slowly deteriorated and eventually death followed. The funeral was over, and the house had begun to forget. By evening, everything had gone quiet. The silence was so peaceful it felt like it was mocking his sorrow. He began to understand the odd cruelty of being human. Marcus found his father sitting beneath the dim light of the living room. “Dad, is this the end?” “Marcus, you think we have lost her, don’t you? That she had slipped into some great void- something unreachable” “But isn’t that how it works, dad?” “Not really. You must’ve learned about the law of conservation of energy. But energy isn’t necessarily consciousness” “So, mother’s brain used electrical signals and chemical reactions to process memories, emotions, and thoughts. And when it stopped functioning, those processes ended. The energy involved was transferred into other forms” “Yes, you’re precisely right, and we can also measure the processes regarding these neural activities, yet we don’t understand how these physical processes begin and end, and forms our consciousness or that if this consciousness of ours, survive death” “So mum could still be out there, somewhere?” “Perhaps, son. Perhaps there’s a heaven and somewhere beyond the stars she is no longer lost to time” Marcus found comfort in a place that might only exist because he needed it to.
By 2035, his obsession had materialized into The Horizon, a spacecraft engineered to explore the edge of consciousness. Its quantum settings were designed to read through dark matter and a field generator for understanding hypothetical negative energy states. And the negative energy could be stabilised to allow the spacecraft’s traversable speed to match the light’s speed. It was perfectly engineered to contract distances between any two points, altering space geometry and equipped with quantum sensors—that could trace anomalous neural activity and energies associated with consciousness. In May 2040, The Horizon embarked on its first mission. Marcus along with his teammates, constantly checked the vacuum fluctuations, gravitational disturbances, and deviations in quantum energies. But their main objective was to flag anomalies. The spacecraft navigated through nebulas and black holes, crossing light-years of space in mere days. By August 2040, Marcus reached a region that had gradual disappearance of cosmic radiation. The sensors recorded a decrease in energy as stars and galaxies faded from view,
leaving only darkness. The ship’s sensors, designed to measure even the faintest energy fluctuations, showed nothing. Undeterred, Marcus pushed forward. The spacecraft, equipped with high-resolution quantum detectors, ventured deeper into the anomalous region, his whole life leading to this very moment. Marcus analyzed the readings but the results were unclear, complete silence. There were no energy traces, no quantum disturbances—nothing. Driven by hope to see if his mother was still out there somewhere, Marcus decided to push “The Horizon” deeper into the darkness until a surge of light enveloped him fully that seemed to wrap reality itself. The ship disintegrated slowly. Atoms unravelled and the fabric of space and time collapsed. Marcus felt the same unravelling in his own body. This place held the source of all the meanings he had been searching for his entire life. It felt cold and bright. It wasn’t necessarily heaven, not an afterlife but felt like something closer to a void. At that moment, he found out, the source of all meanings. And so Marcus realised that it was nothing, just a void which held no answers. Something inside Marcus quietly gave way. He realised that it wasn’t the source of all the meaning that he had been chasing his whole life. It wasn’t about discovering continuity after death or his mother; it was merely having something to live for, just as all humans require a driving force to go on.As the light around him dissolved, he returned.
2nd December, 2040, marked the day Marcus would make his final public appearance about his discovery. He was agitated. His father stood in the doorway, older now. For a moment, neither spoke.
“You think you have lost, don’t you, Marcus? That you’ve found a place you can’t reach. But that’s not how it works” Marcus stared at the floor, “I thought, somewhere in all that darkness, there would be something that held all the answers to my grief and give meaning to my hope” “You are not grieving your mother,Marcus. You are becoming her” Marcus stared at his father “You haven’t realized it yet. You have not lost your mother. Every tear, every action, every moment of joy or sorrow, it’s her finding ways to remain inside you. You are a part of her, her legacy” “But dad-“ “Feel it Marcus. All of it, the grief, the sorrow, the anger, the very process of being hollowed out and let it reshape you” Marcus nodded, the weight of his father’s word settling inside him. His father trailed off, “And when you’ve become someone new, you’ll find that it’s not all that miserable, at all. You don’t have to let go of your mother, son. You just have to keep living” For a moment Marcus felt sad, but then strangely happy. Then, with a reassuring smile he walked out. Outside, In front of an auditorium, packed with people who were eager to know what he had uncovered, he stepped onto the stage and answered.
